Depending on your knowledge of Pilates, the origins of the method and its' founder, Joseph Pilates, the meaning of the term 'Pilates' although widely used, may not mean very much and may be very confusing. Indeed, the word and method of Pilates can be interpreted through many different lenses such as the very well respected teaching schools as BASI or STOTT or Polestar (there are many more, each with areas of excellence).
As a rule of thumb, it's good to go to Pilates classes that are taught by certified instructors, who have been trained through a course that is certified by the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), our regulatory body. When I trained to become a Pilates teacher with Katya Kinski at the Pilates Academy of South Africa, I learned to respect the 6 Pilates Principles and to use them when teaching all movements. These Principles guide me to this day. With Katya I also learned and practiced Joseph Pilates' original repertoire which comprised of specific exercises that continue to assist people all over the world with improving their movement issues.
